The Marryat reels are of Swedish design and originally manufacture too, but as with most everything they are now made in Japan. The machining and quality between the Swedish and Japanese versions is very hard to detect without looking at the stamp on the reel foot. The reels are extremely light and compact in size. The number appellations do not really refer to the line weight, but to the reel diameter in centimeters. The MR9 is 9 centimeters in diameter and a very generous 3.2 centimeter width. The finishes are cold processed anodized and are very durable.
The drag is a very sturdy disc and caliper style. The drag adjusts from just over an ounce (no backlashes) to 25 ounces…not the most powerful drag, but plenty if you know how to palm the reel. The MR9 can handle 12 pound redfish easily.
A Marryat MR9 fly reel is set up for RHW (though easily convertible). Serial #032123. The reel features a quick-change spool and is easily converted from RHW to LHW. The reel weighs 7 ounces with backing and line on it. Designed to hold a WF9 + 200 yards of backing. The reel is packed into a very nice quality zippered pouch.
The Marryat MR9 fly reel is a light weight all aluminum all weather reel for bigger fish with an excellent drag system.
