GM 8.5 10 BOLT LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL POSI REAR WITH 2.41 HIGHWAY GEARS
This is a very desirable GM 8.5 10 bolt Limited Slip Differential Posi rear with 2.41 highway gears.
This specific gear set was widely used throughout the 1970s and early 1980s by General Motors. It is most famously found in Second-Generation F-Body cars, including the 1970–1981 Chevrolet Camaro (Z28/SS) and Pontiac Firebird / Trans Am. Because a 2.41 ratio is geared heavily toward low-RPM highway cruising rather than quick acceleration, it was often paired with automatic transmissions during the fuel-economy-conscious emissions era.
If you are planning to change this gear set to something more performance-oriented (like a 3.42 or 3.73 ratio), note that this gear sits on a 2-series carrier flange. To upgrade to higher performance gears, you will either need to purchase a “thick” aftermarket gear set specifically designed to bolt onto your existing 2-series carrier, or replace the carrier entirely with a 3-series unit.
- The Camaro housing is roughly 1 inch wider overall, and its leaf spring perches are spaced wider at 45-3/8″ center-to-center.
- To make it fit a Nova, you must grind off the original leaf spring pads and weld on new aftermarket Mono-Leaf Perches or Multi-Leaf Perches spaced at the proper 42-7/16″ Nova width. Because it is slightly wider, you will also need to watch your wheel backspacing so the tires do not rub the outer fender lips.
Condition: This GM 8.5 10 bolt rear differential has never been used since purchased several years ago. (See Pictures)
Please note that this GM rear differential turns smoothly, but would recommend replacing the seals and bearings before installation. The Posi Unit looks like new except for some surface rust from sitting, but will easily clean up.
