PENN 525 MAG MAGNETIC CAST CONTROL CONVENTIONAL FISHING REEL
The PENN 525 MAG is a legendary high-speed, magnetic-braked conventional casting reel. Initially introduced as part of PENN’s GS series, it has evolved through multiple generations and it remains one of the most celebrated surf and distance-casting reels ever built, famous for holding world casting records and handling aggressive saltwater fish like Albacore, Striped Bass, Bluefish, and Cod.
Technical Specifications & Engineering:
- Gear Ratio: Blazing fast 6.1:1 retrieve ratio (pulling in roughly 29 inches of line per crank). It uses a heavy-duty bronze alloy main gear and a stainless steel pinion gear.
- Braking System: Fully adjustable magnetic braking dial on the left side plate. This allows you to slide or click the magnets closer to the spool to tame “birdsnests” or overruns when throwing into a headwind.
- Drag Power: Outfitted with PENN’s signature HT-100 multi-disc star drag system. On the early classic models, it utilized a Versa-Drag washer orientation; on the latest Mag4 models, it delivers up to 20 lbs (9 kg) of maximum drag.
- Cage Construction: Uses a lightweight, rigid one-piece graphite composite frame built with inner metal alignment inserts across the spacer bars for high structural strength.
- Bearing Configuration Details The Spool Setup: The high-speed live spindle design relies on two primary high-quality bearings supporting the aluminum spool axis to maximize your casting distance and keep free-spool rotation completely smooth.
